Will the Changes to Google Authorship affect Organic SEO?

Google Authorship Organic SEORecently, Google made an announcement that sent shivers down the spine of marketers, bloggers, and business owners everywhere: Google Authorship will change. Now everyone is left to sit back, relax (if you can), and wonder how these changes will affect Organic SEO (search engine optimization).

“We’ve been doing lots of work to clean up the visual design of our search results, in particular creating a better mobile experience and a more consistent design across devices,” explained Google’s John Mueller. “As a part of this, we’re simplifying the way authorship is shown in mobile and desktop.”

So what does this mean exactly? Google is getting rid of Authorship profile pictures and Google+ circle counts on search results. This is being done in an effort to clean up searches, offering users a less cluttered experience, especially on mobile.

There is still no indication when this will happen or if it will affect organic SEO. What research is showing, however, is that while these changes may not affect search rankings, they may affect click-through rates. According to Justin Briggs, Senior Marketing Manager at Getty Images, authorship profile photos and circle counts completely change the way we look at search results. The eye is naturally drawn to search results featuring images, even if they are below the fold, improving click-through rates for such posts.
