About 40 West Assistance & Referral Center

Established in 1993 by the 40 West Community of Churches, the 40 West Assistance and Referral Center (“40 West”) provides food, energy assistance, prescription help, transportation help, and referrals to our neighbors in West Baltimore. Forty-five volunteers and one part-time employee operate the center. In 2013, 40 West Assistance & Referral Center entered into a partnership agreement with the Maryland Food Bank. As a Maryland Food Bank network partner, 40 West offers a choice pantry and monthly food distributions.

Since 2022, the need for food has almost doubled. In 2025, 40 West Assistance & Referral Center distributed food to 7,449 households, up from 3,852 in 2022. During this same period, costs for other essential needs of everyday life have increased significantly. In 2025, 40 West helped 265 households with non-food assistance by offering grants, application assistance, and referrals. They also provide direct grants for energy assistance and prescriptions to city residents in 21207 and 21229
