3 Key Points To Help You Understand Google Analytics

google analytics

Google Analytics is a powerful web analytics tool that allows you to track and report your website traffic, in hopes of increasing performance.

Google Analytics is a highly useful web analytics tool brought to you by Google that allows you to track and report your website traffic. It is great for determining what sources brought visitors to your site and how they navigated it from there. If you want to get the most of your Google Analytics reports, take note of the key points below.

What is Bounce Rate?

People often misinterpret a bounce rate as the number of people who navigate away from your website after landing on it. However, bounce rate refers to the percentage of visitors who navigate away from your website after only viewing one landing page (as opposed to clicking links from that landing page to another). You want to keep your bounce rate low. Keep in mind, if you have a single page website, your bounce rate is always going to report high numbers (since the only way to visit a second page would be to reload the website).

What is Session Duration?

If you think your session duration numbers are reflecting the exact amount of seconds someone spent on your site, you are wrong. Instead, Google bases the average session duration on the difference between the time a user entered the first page of your website to the time they entered the last page of your website. For example, if a user landed on Landing Page 1 at 11:00 a.m, Landing Page 2 at 11:05 and Landing Page 3 at 11:10 – the session duration would be 10 minutes (regardless of how long they spent on the Page 3, unless they engaged further from there). Ideally, you want to keep your session duration high.

What are Google AdWords? Can I Link AdWords and Analytics?

Google AdWords is an advertising service brought to you by Google that allows businesses to display ads on Google and in their advertising network. Using the AdWords service, businesses can set a budget for advertising that only requires them to pay when people click the ads. This service relies largely on rich keywords. It is possible to link your Analytics and AdWords platforms for tracking purposes, allowing you to study campaign patterns and increase profit. Once linked, you can import new columns (bounce rate, session duration, etc.) in AdWords to further analyze the performance of your keywords in different circumstances.
