SnapStats: Snapchat Facts That Prove Its Social Media Marketing Value

Adventure Web’s social media team knows all about Snapchat!

One of the coolest things (or most frustrating things, depending on your point of view) about social media marketing is that it’s always changing, evolving, and growing. We’ve recently discussed ways that powerhouses like Facebook and Twitter are changing things up, but what about some smaller social platforms? In the case of Snapchat, the four-year-old brainchild of Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy, they didn’t let the Goliaths of Zuckerberg’s and Dorsey’s creation get in their way. Here are some surprising facts about Snapchat’s relatively short lifetime that prove that it’s worth considering in your social media marketing model.

4. Snapchat is Massively Popular Among Younger Users

Something to keep in mind through this post is that Snapchat is perfect for targeting a younger demographic. To prove that point, in 2016 Snapchat overtook Facebook as the most popular social media platform among ages 12-24, at 72% to 68%. Conversely, among the entire sample in the survey conducted by The Infinite Dial at Edison Research, Facebook was used by 64% while Snapchat was only at 23%. This isn’t to say that Snapchat is useless in marketing to older customers or in B2B marketing — that just isn’t the ideal target market.

3. Snapchat is the Nation’s Second-Favorite Social Network

Another question in the Infinite Dial study asked which social network users visited most often. While Facebook has a stranglehold on the lead at 61%, Snapchat finished second, at 8%. That might not seem like much, but considering that it’s a 100% increase from 4% in the same study conducted last year, and considering that 8% is more than Instagram’s 7%, Twitter’s 5%, and LinkedIn’s 4%, it’s clear that Snapchat is growing fast.

2. It’s Shattering Twitter’s Growth Pace

Twitter is undeniably a huge force in the world of social media marketing. In Infinite Dial’s 2013 study, 15% of Americans used Twitter. This year that number was 21%. From 2015 to 2016, one-third the time span, Snapchat grew the same percentage, from 17% to 23%. That’s an incredibly steep adoption curve.

1. Snapchat is Becoming a Powerhouse

Snapchat has more users than Twitter. For years and years we’ve put Facebook and Twitter in the same sentence when talking about the biggest names in social media. Now, Twitter is bottoming out the top 5 social brands, behind Facebook, Instagram (also owned by Facebook), Pinterest, and good ol’ Snapchat. Snapchat also has better awareness than other popular social brands like Pinterest, LinkedIn, Tumblr, Vine, et al. Basically, what we’re saying is that Snapchat should absolutely be on your radar by now.

Keep in mind that all of this growth has happened in just 4 years, while Facebook has been around since 2004, and Twitter since 2006. The Oxford word of the year for 2013 was selfie, and Snapchat was a huge part of that. We recommend perusing the Infinite Dial study for more about this recent social media study. While Snapchat won’t be perfect for every brand out there, take the time to bring it up next time you’re thinking about your social media marketing strategy. But first, let’s take a selfie!
