Riding the New Wave of Social Media Marketing Trends

Stay hip to the latest social media marketing trends with our VP of Digital Media, Gina Ramsey!

In 2016, social media marketing is a necessity, if not already a given. If you’re trying to build your online presence, social media marketing is one of — if not the best way to go about establishing your business on the Internet. There are the classics like Facebook and Twitter, two of the oldest, biggest, and best known social networks out there. But what about new networks? Our very own Vice President of Digital Media, Gina Ramsey, will be featured on Allan Hirsh Advisors’ “AHA! Business Radio” show on 1300 AM CBS Sports Radio next Tuesday, April 26th, from 6-7pm to talk about some of the newest and greatest social media marketing trends. Social media marketing is always evolving, and to stay hip and relevant online, you have to keep up. Here are a few new social media marketing trends that Gina will be talking about on Tuesday — and they might just help you boost your business.

Snapchat’s Social Media Marketing Value

Perhaps one of the hottest and fastest growing social networks out there is Snapchat. That yellow square with a cute little ghost has taken the world by storm in the past few years, growing at a pace that shatters the way Twitter made its way onto the scene. You can click through to that link above for more “SnapStats”, if you feel so inclined. The gist of it all is that Snapchat is already huge and getting huger, and should not be left out of your social media marketing plan.

With a remarkably young demographic (63% of users between 13 and 34), this is a great way to find customers that will hopefully keep coming back to you for years and years to come. As far as actually executing goes, there are a few ways to go. When users follow you on Snapchat, they’ll be able to see your “story” — a collection of one-to-ten-second long pictures or videos that you post publicly into a series, where each post stays live on your story for 24 hours. This is a great way to give behind-the-scenes looks at your company or promote specials or events. Another newer feature of Snapchat is the ability to create custom locations-specific overlays (“geo-filters”) for events or locations. Just design your artwork, submit it for approval, pay a small fee, and you’re able to promote your message with any snap that users, yourself or your customers, send out — the ultimate branded impression. There’s more about custom geo-filters here.

Taking a Peek at Periscope

Another big, new platform on the scene within younger demographics is an app called Periscope. Periscope allows users to stream live video to their followers, which is an amazing way to broadcast and promote events. It doesn’t have to be an event though — just like with Snapchat, it’s also a great way to give behind-the-scenes looks at your business’ goings-on (as long as those goings-on are relatively interesting). What’s great about Periscope is that it’s seamlessly integrated with Twitter, so it’s super easy to convert your Twitter followers into Periscope followers (if they’re as hip to new social media as you are!). And don’t worry about your followers missing out on your live stream — all videos are saved for later viewing, and you can even post your live streams or saved images to Twitter right through Periscope.

Teaching Old Dogs New Tricks

Staying current with social media marketing isn’t just about new platforms — it’s also about keeping up with how established platforms are evolving. For example, Facebook recently hosted its annual F8 conference, where it revealed Facebook Live — a live-streaming feature nearly identical to Periscope…but on Facebook. Facebook is still the biggest social platform by miles, so having this new function can be great to broadcast to your already-cultivated Facebook following. Aside from that, Twitter and Instagram have each recently updated their algorithms to display users’ feeds, which you can read about here for Twitter, and here for Instagram.
